Prescott Valley, AZ – The Arizona Sundogs lost, New Year’s Eve to the Denver Cutthroats, 4-3 at Tim’s Toyota Center Tuesday night.
Denver’s Daniel Barczuk recorded a hat trick tonight scoring three goals. His first came shorthanded five minutes into the opening period with assists from Garett Bembridge and Aaron MacKenzie. He scored again 16:48 into the first giving the Cutthroats a two goal lead after the first 20 minutes of play.
Barczuk tallied his third goal 3:51 in the second period on a four-on-four play after both Garrett Clarke and Daniel Moriarty were each accessed two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Sundogs battled back from a three goal deficit posting two goals in the second frame. Kevin Baker put Arizona on the board in the third period 5:40 and then five minutes later new Sundogs addition, David Rutherford scored his first goal in a Sundogs sweater while on the power play.
The third period was much of the same as Denver’s Bembridge, scored the game winning goal with just over half a period remaining. Sundogs coach decided to pull the goalie in the final seconds to give them the man advantage with the extra attacker which proved to work when Bryan Cameron recorded his second point of the evening scoring with 33 seconds remaining.
Chris Rawlings faced 25 shots and made 21 saves. The Sundogs outshot the Cutthroats 41-25. Arizona was 2-5 on the power play and Denver was 0-1.
The Sundogs wrapped up the 2013 year and closed out their three game series against Denver with a 1-2-0 record. Arizona now heads on the road 12 days and four games.
