Prescott Valley, AZ – It was a tough battle for the Arizona Sundogs tonight. In their first match-up of the 2012-13 season they were shutout by Allen Americans, Steve Silverthorn.
Just 48 seconds into the first period David Schlemko releases a shot on goal opening the night to a flurry of shots made by Arizona. 1:49 into the game Ludwig was sent to the penalty box for tripping and put Arizona on their 1st Power Play of the evening. Seven minutes later the Americans, Adam Pineault made the first goal of the game coming in at 10:39 with assists from Ludwig and Skinner. At the end of the 1st period Sundogs lead shots on goal 9-5.
The Americans second goal came on a 2-man advantage power play when Mickael Bedard and Gordon Burnett both received penalties, Bedard for high-sticking and Burnett for interference. The third goal came late in the 2nd period by Darryl Bootland giving them a 3-0 lead over the Sundogs though the Sundogs continued to out shoot the Americans 18-12 at the end of the 2rd.
Scotty Howes scored his 2nd goal of the night just 3:13 into the 3rd period. The Sundogs thought they had a goal when Adam Smyth took a shoot and the hit deflected off the pipes. Immediately following Smyth and Ryley Grantham dropped the gloves and were both assessed a 2min. roughing penalty. Earlier in the 1st period they previously exchanged words in front of the net following yet another blocked shot by Silverthorn.
The Sundogs had the advantage tonight going on six power plays but ultimately lost to the Americans with a 4-0 score though not for a lack of effort. David Brown was in net tonight for the Sundogs and made more than one great save tonight against a stacked team in Allen. Both Clubs meet again tomorrow evening at the Allen Event Center at 2:05pm local standard time.
