Prescott Valley, AZ – The Arizona Sundogs picked up their first road win of the season against Rapid City Rush. In a wild and unpredictable match-up the Sundogs hung on to their lead making the final score 4-2.
At the end of the opening period neither team was able to find the net. The Sundogs went on their first powerplay of the evening when Rapid City’s Weselowski took a hooking penalty but they were unable to execute. 5:32 into the 2nd Kyrzakos put Arizona on the board when he slipped the puck past Boron giving them the lead. A minute later Rapid City’s Behler answered back with a goal on Russo tying up the score. The Sundogs didn’t let their goal go unanswered as Nehring and Hood immediately collected two goals. With 4:46 left in the 2nd Kyrzakos scored the 4th goal of the evening, pulling the Sundogs to a 4-1 lead.
The 3rd and final period was nothing short on action, when together both teams tallied 27 penalty minutes. Halfway through the period Rapid City’s Alex Penner was assessed a game misconduct when he jumped into the Sundogs’ bench after Smyth. Smyth earlier in the 1st had served a hard check on Penner which Penner refused to let go of lightly. The Sundogs were 1 for 6 on the power play tonight and fired 24 shots on goal. Russo was in net for the Sundogs and stopped 33 shots on goal.
Tonight was Hood’s first goal of the season with the Sundogs, while Nehring leads the team with 7 points. Tomorrow night the Sundogs and Rapid City go head to head in the 2-game series.
